What Medicare and Insurance Cover for Hearing Aids

Original Medicare may cover a diagnostic hearing evaluation when a physician orders it, but it does not pay for hearing aids. Some Medicare Advantage and private plans include a hearing aid allowance, and the amount varies a lot from plan to plan. Call with your insurance card in hand and we will help you see what your plan covers and what is left to budget for.

Financing FAQs

Common questions about paying for hearing care: what hearing aids cost, what Medicare and insurance cover, how Cherry payment plans work, and where FSA or HSA dollars fit in.

The cost depends on your hearing loss, the style you choose, and the technology level. Phonak, Oticon, and Widex each make hearing aids at several levels, so there are options to fit most budgets.

Dr. Press will not recommend a device until he has tested your hearing and talked with you about where you struggle to hear. Once he knows what you need, he goes over the price with you plainly before anything is ordered. Follow-up care is included with every fitting, so adjustments in the weeks after are part of the plan. Call (620) 235-5015 in Southeast Kansas or (816) 361-2300 in Kansas City.

Original Medicare does not pay for hearing aids or the fitting. It may cover a diagnostic hearing evaluation, for example when your doctor orders one to help diagnose a medical problem. Some Medicare Advantage plans add a hearing aid benefit, and the amount differs from plan to plan.

The easiest way to know where you stand is to call before your visit with your Medicare or Medicare Advantage card handy. If your plan leaves a balance, a Cherry payment plan can spread it over monthly payments. Call (620) 235-5015 for Pittsburg and Fort Scott or (816) 361-2300 for Kansas City.

We accept Medicare. Beyond that, hearing coverage varies more than most people expect. Some plans give a set allowance toward hearing aids, some cover only the hearing evaluation, and some want a referral from your primary care doctor first.

Because this is a small, owner-run practice, you can ask us directly about your benefits instead of being passed along to a billing center. Call with your insurance card in hand and we will help you sort out what applies before your first appointment. If you are not sure whether you need a referral, check with your plan or ask us when you call.

Cherry is a patient payment plan that lets you split the cost of hearing care, including hearing aids, into monthly payments. You can check your eligibility with Cherry online before your appointment and see which plan options are available to you.

Payment options through Cherry are issued by Cherry's financing partners, not by our office. Term length, approval amount, 0% APR, and other promotional rates are subject to eligibility, so review the terms Cherry shows you before you accept a plan. Once you are set, bring your plan details to your fitting in Pittsburg, Fort Scott, or Kansas City.

Usually, yes. Hearing aids, batteries, and many repairs count as qualified medical expenses, so Flexible Spending Account and Health Savings Account dollars can generally be used for them. Some patients combine FSA or HSA funds with an insurance allowance to lower what they pay out of pocket.

Rules and limits differ by plan and can reset each year, so check with your plan administrator about eligibility and any spend-by deadline. New hearing aids come with a 45-day trial period, so you have time to make sure they work for you. Call (620) 235-5015 or (816) 361-2300 with questions.
